Making Bookmarks to Love and Give

We’ve got another handcrafted Christmas gift idea for you! It is so easy and best of all, if you are crafty, you'll likely have many of the necessary supplies already on hand.

We find it hard to say goodbye to Christmas cards from years past; many hold pictures of people we haven't seen for months, maybe years! Now we will put them to good use. And since we're saving our pennies as Christmas gets closer, coming up with creative, fun and meaningful handcrafted gifts is always on our radar.

So, dig your saved Christmas cards out and let's make some fun little bookmarks. These make perfect gifts for all your more bookish friends, or better yet, you could tuck one into that favorite book that you're giving! This craft doesn't have to be reserved just for old Christmas cards, but other cards we receive any time of the year could make a good bookmark too.

Here's what you will need:

  • Stack of Christmas cards from years past
  • Scissors or exacto knife
  • Ruler
  • 1/8" hole punch
  • Ribbon, thread, yarn, etc.
  • Other embellishments (buttons, sequins, rope, stickers, etc.)
  • Glue stick or adhesive spray

Now comes the fun part! Create your handmade bookmarks:

  1. Using the ruler, either trace out where you want to cut the card or use your exacto knife to make the cut.
  2. Punch a tiny hole at the top edge for the ribbon.
  3. Insert a 6" length folded in half through the hole and form a slip knot.
  4. Gently pull to snug it next to the top edge, making sure the bookmark will lie flat.
  5. Carefully glue on the embellishments you desire. Ta Da!

And, don’t forget about those other special cards you’ve received throughout the year from your birthday, anniversary or that thoughtful thank you. You can save that special enclosed message by framing it or turning it into a bookmark just for you!
